Tiruvarur Big Temple

The temple is gigantic in structure. From a distance of miles the gopurams are visible. It is a great pilgrim centre, through out the year, particularly in the month of Chittirai when the most important festival, the annual festival of Sri Thiyagaraja is performed. There are four gopurams on four sides. The tower on the west is particularly noteworthy for the fine sculpture in brick and mortar. The colossal structure of the temple could be well imagined from its length of 846 feet with breadth of 666 feet. There are several tanks attached as an adjunct to the temple wherein devout pilgrims take their bath before entering into the precincts of the temple.

On the western side of the temple there is a famous tank known as Kamalalayam where Goddess Kamala (Lakshmi) took her birth. It is considered to be the biggest tank in the whole of South India, having an island temple in the middle dedicated to the Goddess. She was born with the nectar during the course of churning of the Milky Ocean by the Devas and the Asuras. Varuna, the God of Water brought up Kamala, and after devoted penance she was married to Vishnu at Thiruvarur. Hence the name Kamalalayam.

Besides the tank, a peculiar musical instrument called Panchamukha Vadya and Sivalingam made of sapphire and called Marakatalingam are worth seeing. The musical instrument has got five faces and is ornamented with the snake, the swastika and the lotus on three. The fourth face is plain without decorations. The central face shows the face of a deer. It is said that Nandi played on this when Siva danced. The circumference of the instrument is fifty-six inches. Thiruvarur is one of the seven sacred places of Lord Thiyagaraja. The others are Tirumaraikkadu (Vedaranyam), Tirunagai (Nagapattinam.), Tirukkolili, Tirukkaramayil, Tiruvanmiyoor and Tirunallar. In this temple where Thiyagaraja's idol is worshipped, the Navagrahas are placed in a line looking at the shrine. It is a peculiar feature.

When you visit the temple, you can really feel about the eternal life. I'm damn sure about it. Here, a great siddha named Kamalamuni came and worshipped Kamalambal.

Tiruvarur Central University

The Central University of Tamil Nadu was established by an Act of Parliament (no 25 of 2009, 20/03.2009). The University is located at Tiruvarur, headquarters of the District in the heart of the great Chola Empire. Preliminary work on establishing the University has resulted in the tentative identification of about 500 acres of land in two revenue villages (see annexure and map). The Government of Tamil Nadu has assured that a multi-storey building (GF plus three floors) measuring about 55000 plus square feet will be made available for a temporary campus for launching academic programmes and planning for campus development in due course (details of the building annexed). Continuous interaction with the administration both at the district and state level indicates substantial movement in issuance of a formal order in this regard.

As an interim measure the vice chancellor and his single person staff (at a very junior office assistant level) is operating out of two small rooms in the PWD inspection bungalow. Efforts are afoot to locate a small residential building for camp office and temporary accommodation of the vice chancellor. Basic computers and elementary office equipment have been purchased apart from establishing landline and net connectivity for the University.

திருவாரூர் Tiruvarur

Tiruvarur (Tamil: திருவாரூர் (tinuvānūr) (also spelt as Thiruvarur) is a town and a municipality in Tiruvarur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Tiruvarur is the administrative headquarters of Tiruvarur district. Tiruvarur is one of the oldest towns which has been popular as cultural head quarters for many centuries. This ancient town in Chola heartland is famous for its Sri Tyagaraja temple, as well as the annual chariot festival held in the month of April. Tiruvarur also happens to be the birth place of Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar and Syama Sastri, popularly known as the Trinity of Carnatic music.

History
The actual history of Thiruvarur Periya Kovil (Thiyarajar Temple) goes back more than 30th Century BC. The chola kings just renovated the thiyarajar temple and built few extra shrines inside the temples. The known foremost devotee Tirunavukkarasar on 7th Century CE itself has said in his pasurams that the real existence of this cultural heritage is unknown and the temple is in existence for many centuries.

According to history, the central temple in Tiruvarur was installed by Muchukanta Chola. Tiruvarur is also associated with another legendary king, Manuneedhi Cholan.

Tiruvarur is mentioned in the works of Thirugnana Sambanthar and Tirunavukkarasar, the foremost Saivite saints of 7th century CE.[3] Tirunavukkarasar mentions several Tiruvarur temple traditions, such as Marghazhi Aathirai Vizha, Panguni Uttirai Perunaal and Veedhivitakanin Veedhi Panni. The granite structure of the Tyagarajaswami temple was first constructed by Aditya Chola I in 9th century and revamped during the reign of Rajaraja Chola I. The temple was upgraded and rebuilt with stone by Rajendra Chola I. The royal patronage continued and the town flourished as a cultural centre during the rule of the Nayaks, Vijayanagar kings and Marathas. This temple is one of the biggest in the country and this has the biggest temple chariot in Tamil Nadu. The chariot is very beautiful and Arulmigu Thyagarajaswamy Car festival celebrated here in months of March -April attracts large crowds. Tiruvarur car is very famous one and it is called as 'Aalithre' in Tamil meaning car like ocean.

In this temple there is an excellent and unique musical instrument called "Panchamuga Vadyam" with five faces. Each face is ornamented; one with a snake, another with lotus and another one is plain without decorations. One has a Swastik sign. Over each face leather is spread and over the central one Deerskin is spread. It is said that Nanchi Devi played on this instrument when Lord Shiva danced.

The current Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Dr. M.Karunanidhi, was born in the village of Thirukuvalai at Nagapattinam district, near Tiruvarur, and spent his childhood here. Tiruvaur was part of the Thanjavur District until 1991 and Nagapattinam District until 1997. Tiruvarur was made the headquarters of Tiruvarur District when it was carved out of Nagapattinam in 1997. Thiruvarur car festival 2008 was celebrated very grandly. The people came from all the surrounding areas.
